MENA’s Only Private Label & Licensing Event

Private labelling is a fastgrowing route to new business, not only for SMEs, but also for established manufacturers who want to expand their portfolio, test new markets, and increase their control within the retail landscape.

Today’s consumers value variety, ethical standards and cost-efficiency over brand names, which is why Private Label & Licensing Middle East is propelling the Gulfood portfolio into 3rd party production this October.

The endless sea of suppliers. How do guarantee the reliability of a supplier?

We source our suppliers based on the highest industry standards. A thorough supplier audit is something we do on an ongoing basis to determine how they source their raw materials as well as their country of origin, granting us complete traceability. We also sign confidentiality agreements and contracts prior to any product development.

How do you market your products inside your store?

We use a different marketing mix to promote our products as per our marketing strategy. For in-store marketing we use product placement, in-store promotions, and category management (product universe).

If we want to sell a Private Label line inside Carrefour stores, how can we do it?

Suppliers are always encouraged to contact our merchandise team for listing their products. Please visit our stand at Private Label & Licensing ME exhibition.

How do you ensure the supplier is sending the quality product you agreed upon?

All products are analyzed in a laboratory up to 10 times a year, to ensure the product quality and specs are met as agreed in the contract.

What is Carrefour's strategy to attract brand fans? Do you only rely on providing a cheaper version of your products?

The key to getting customers to consider private label products over name brands is to instil trust in them. It’s our responsibility as retailers to demonstrate that private label products are on par with their counterparts in terms of quality, and therefore being transparent about the sourcing and origin of products is of utmost importance and one of the most effective ways to do so. At Carrefour, for example, our traceability test involves randomly selecting a product and giving the supplier one hour to track it from shelf to raw material.

Within the hot beverages category, and specifically coffee, what are the local (regional) challenges to achieve 35% of private label in the Middle East?

Adaptation to local taste given the variety of tastes, types and etc. Quality, price and taste remain the main factors to achieve a strong presence in the hot beverages market.

How are you choosing the products categories to develop your private label products?

We choose our products based on market studies which foresees the product performance. The creation and testing process is intense, it takes about seven months to launch a product. It involves a thorough supplier audit to determine how they source their raw materials as well as their country of origin, granting us complete traceability. It doesn’t stop there, once launched, all products are analyzed in a laboratory up to 10 times a year. We also sign confidentiality agreements and contracts prior to any product development.

Do you do modifications to non-food products to differentiate your product from competitors using the same PL manufacturer?

All products are adapted to fit our customers taste. They have to pass blind panels to be approved. If rejected by the panel, supplier is encouraged to improve his formula/recipe.

Where do you sell your private label products?

Offline at Carrefour stores, and online on carefouruae.com and Carrefournow.com, we also make our private label available on all the major online shopping platforms such as noon.com, amazon.com, talabaat.com.

What is Carrefour doing to reduce the amount of plastic in the stores?

Carrefour launched many initiatives through their sustainability team to support and educate customers about the importance of reducing the amount of single use plastic in their day to day routine. We were the first retailer in the UAE to sell reusable shopping bags, having launched our iconic ‘starfish’ bag in 2007. Since then, we consistently encouraged all customers to re-evaluate their usage of single-use plastic and consider how they can opt for more sustainable alternatives. Today, we sell three different types of reusable bags: a woven plastic bag (retail price: AED 2.5) a canvas foldable bag (retail price: AED 9.5) and a heavy-duty juco bag (retail price: AED10). Carrefour promises to replace any of these bags at any point if they are damaged or can no longer be used. Recently we launched the “Green Home”, the first ever detergent refill machine which opt customers to reuse their bottles.
